For some reason we are so very drawn to vintage kitchen items, so much so, that we are constantly on the lookout for them at local thrift stores and estate sales. In today’s throwaway era, it seems that a typical kitchen appliance only has a life of a decade if we are lucky, and kitchen gadgets and cooking items not only lack aesthetic value, but durability as well.
Thankfully great vintage finds are available if you happen to be in the right spot at the right time, or are willing to pay the price. Here are several of the retro kitchen items that we love!
1) Vintage curved refrigerators and gas stoves. Where did we go wrong here? How did everything curvy and durable turn into a square shaped short lived mess? We heart this fridge! This one was from Crosley, and the model was Shelvador, from 1952.
And look, look, at this beautiful vintage Tappan gas stove. OMG.
2) The vintage lazy susan, complete with trays. Ikea makes a similar style but somehow it’s not the same.
3) Russel Wright Pottery: An American art icon and ceramic dinnerware designer from 1939 to 1959, we especially love his “American Modern” collection for Steubenville Pottery. Our favorite color is a retro pea green called “chartreuse”.
4) The old school kitchen egg timer. With today’s digital appliances, iphone apps and kitchen tv screens, this is an absolute lost icon of the past. But we adore the simple functionality shown here by Mirro.
5) Pyrex! Vintage pyrex will most likely outlive us, and we love the way they transition from the fridge or freezer to oven with ease. We have been lemming these so much! Named “primary colors”, the bowls were sold in various versions from the 1940’s through the 1970’s.
Do you have any vintage kitchen loves? We’d love to hear about them! Shoot us a comment and let us know.
Tomorrow we will be back with a delicious chef recipe, stay tuned!
